Summer Cabin Counselor

May 2018 - August 2019 • Brookston, IN

What I liked

I loved the way the full time staff set me up for success. I was well trained, supported, and encouraged. I love the experiences I've had while working with Tecumseh campers. Typical job responsibilities include petting goats at the mini farm, canoeing with campers at the lake, dressing up as crazy as you can for opening campfire, singing silly songs at the top of your lungs, sleeping under the most beautiful stars in the world, and consuming way too many s'mores! It doesn't get better than this. I've made lifelong friends and grown as a professional and as a person.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have this job all year long!

Advice

If you're wondering whether you should spend a summer at camp or try to do something "more related" to your major such as an internship, just come to camp! I know there are lots of professional experiences pulling for your attention, but camp is simply the best use of your time. At camp you learn collaboration, communication, resilience, confidence, and so many more soft skills employers are looking for. No matter what job I'm interviewing for, I am always able to look back to my time at camp to explain to future employers why I'm a valuable asset to their organization.

Creative Art Director

May - August 2019 • Brookston, IN

What I liked

Oh boy where do I START?! Camp Tecumseh was a great summer job for many reasons. Everyone at Camp Tecumseh is fun, loving, compassionate, and ready to have a great time. People build you up at Camp Tecumseh and allow you to be your true self. From the swimming pools, horses, archery, field games, and extensive art project selection, you and your kiddos will have a summer you will never forget. And let's not forget about the friendships or the abundance of s'more you will have!

What I wish was different

I wish camp would be longer. It always goes by so fast because of how much there is to do.

Advice

Everyone needs to go to summer camp. If you didn't get the opportunity to go as a camper, my biggest piece of advice for you now is to go for as long as you can while you're able to because the summers go fast but the memories last a life time.

Overnight Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Brookston, IN

What I liked

Everything about Camp Tecumseh from the caring and supportive full time and summer staff to the fact that you are living the summer dream, makes it so there is very little not to like. Some of my favorite things were getting to see my campers grow in self confidence and bonding with their peers while jumping outside of their comfort zones and trying things that they never would have done before.

What I wish was different

I can't think of anything. Camp is the hardest job that you will ever love so there are ups and downs, but ultimately it is more than worth it!

Advice

Come ready for adventure! Be ready to give your heart and soul into giving campers the best week of their summer. This summer is going to be one that is unforgettable so remember to do all the things!

Cabin Counselor, Lifeguard

May - August 2019 • Brookston, IN

What I liked

Working with kids and with such an amazing staff. Taking part in the most joyful part of everyone's summer, all summer long. The opportunity (and encouragement!) to let loose, get outside your comfort zone, and help everyone do the same.

What I wish was different

Honestly? Vanishingly little. As with any job of this kind of intensity and age cohort, there are going to be highs and lows. There's no avoiding that. But Camp T does a great job supporting its staff and fostering a welcoming, safe, joyful environment. Their leadership is Experienced with a capital E.

Advice

First of all, go for it. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and this job is like the buzzer-beater winning shot at the state championships of summer jobs. Keep an open mind. Don't bring too many expectations. Get outside your comfort zone at every opportunity. Take an interest in everybody. It's so worth it.
