Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2021 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Capital One actually cares about its employees - as interns, we received multiple snack boxes and swag packages, as well as access to many online learning resources. I also never met a single person I didn't enjoy talking to or working with.

What I wish was different

I wish I learned more new skills, the team I was working on was using technology I was already familiar with for the most part.

What I liked

Felt very supported as an intern, worked with an amazing manager who was very helpful and wanted to see me succeed. There are a lot of intern events to socialize/network as well as learn about the company.

What I wish was different

I wish interns would be able to choose their own project rather than get a project assigned to them.

Advice

Don't be scared to ask questions! Put yourself out there to network and try to learn as much as possible because there are a lot of resources to

What I liked

I really enjoyed the work because it was a mix of data analytics and solving business problems. The people were very kind and the work-life balance was great.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked on a project that was not as credit-heavy.

Advice

I would say that you should try to learn as much as possible. Not only did I learn many technical skills such as Excel, Powerpoint, and SQL but also communication skills.

Human-Centered Design Intern

June - August 2021 • McLean, VA

What I liked

During the summer HR Internship Program my assigned team was extremely supportive, along with my intern cohort. I never felt like "just the intern" but part of the team, and that team had genuine interest in my success and getting to know me. My project also allowed for creativity, networking, and UX experience.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID-19, I was remote during my internship program. I wished it would've been in person as I am a people-person.

Advice

Take full advantage of networking with those outside of your assigned team, you never know what connections could help you long term or the advice that mentors could give to you.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The work/life balance, the people, and the work. I found it very enjoyable to work in a team-oriented group on a customer-driven project. They also really appreciated my work as an intern!

What I wish was different

I obviously wish it could have been in-person, but other than that, I don't have many complaints.

Advice

Learn some SQL and basic data analysis tools, as well as be eager to learn. Everyone wants to help you, so ask them for help if necessary! It's a very collaborative atmosphere and a great place to work, so make the most of the experience!

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2020 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

The company is amazing! They really stress work-life balance and everyone (at least according to my mentor) is out by 4:30. It's super casual. The mentorship was fantastic. My mentors guided me through the project and anytime I had a problem, I was able to get their help and unblock the issue. My manager was also very kind and helpful (everyone was!). My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to complete it and would be on my own doing it, but that's so far from true. Everyone's always willing to help. I learned so much. My project also really made an impact. Of course, there are outliers, but most projects are real projects that real teams work on and they go into production. Oh, and lots of free lunches. Loved that.

What I wish was different

I wish I participated in more intern events, and I wish there were more intern events within our LOB.

Advice

Take advantage of the intern events and meet people. It's especially hard virtually, so the effort must come from you

Management Intern

June - August 2020 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

The company culture, networking opportunities, ability to give and receive honest feedback, and the opportunities to grow and be challenged.

What I wish was different

I would've loved to have been in person, but Capital One created a fantastic virtual internship experience.

Advice

Meet as many people as you can. One of the best parts of this internship was networking across the company.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2020 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Despite being virtual, my experience at Capital One was a great learning experience and they made a huge effort to let me meet people at the company, as well as other interns. I felt as though my project was relevant to things they were trying to change within my department, and in my last week after my presentation, I saw them testing some of my recommendations.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, COVID made everything virtual.

Advice

Ask questions! If you don't understand something, don't be afraid to ask. Your managers are a great resource and can put you in contact with people who can help you on your project. This is also a great way to network.

Finance Intern

June - August 2020 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The company culture is great - everyone is willing to help or meet with you. You're also treated like a team member - you get to work on real projects and take ownership of your work, sit in on meetings, and add value to the team.

What I wish was different

The whole experience was great, but I think having an in person internship would've been even better!

Advice

Be proactive when it comes to your project - don't be afraid to ask questions, reach out to different teams, see how your project can help people and determine what you can do to go above and beyond.
