Capital One

Business Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Capital One's Analyst Intern Program is extremely well designed - they have a lot of programming to teach interns about all of the various lines of business, teams, and roles available! On top of that, the program is huge so there are a ton of opportunities to get to know people from other schools that you could one day be working with. My manager and mentor were amazing, and have stayed in touch throughout the semester.

Advice

Get to know the other interns, it makes the summer 100x better!

Commercial Banking Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My internship experience at Capital One was incredible. Throughout the summer, executives from all over the company held speaker sessions to speak with the 25 interns in the commercial banking program. Additionally, the CEO, Rich Fairbank, spoke to the entirety of Capital One's interns for two hours at their headquarters in person. These speaker series highlighted Capital One's dedication t to their interns as well as the company's inviting culture. Throughout the summer, I was encouraged to speak to as many people in the firm as possible, and employees were always willing to set a time to have a coffee chat and talk about their work. The leadership is great and I was always given work that was interesting and furthered my understanding of the business.

What I wish was different

The programming staff was unorganized sometimes especially with travel and instructions.

Advice

Do not be afraid to talk to people and show interest in the company. They are looking for bright and talented individuals that want to be there.

Data Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

The culture is amazing. It is truly a bank embodying a tech company. The compensation is as good as anywhere in Silicon Valley and they pay for your housing. They really try their best to place you based on your preferences.

What I wish was different

I wish I had lived closer to downtown of Richmond, so I could explore. My team dealt with Capital One' s cloud infrastructure, and I wish I could do the same work more on the client-facing product side.

Advice

Meet as many interns as possible, and the more work you put in to your project, the more rewarding the final result.

What I liked

Even as a Sophomore, I was placed on a team doing very real work and analysis. You learn a lot of hard skills like how to code in SQL (the entirety of my project was based on this) and creating statistical models.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was a fantastic experience

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2017 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Probably one of the best summers of my life. Capital One really cares about you and they'll do anything to help you learn as an individual. Very generous pay, beautiful facilities, and most important, amazing people.

What I wish was different

Your experience, work, and project is completely determined by your manager. I know some interns got stuck with not-so-exciting stuff... so I guess I would change the "quality control" of the internship? luckily, I got a really good project with a cool team.

Advice

Take advantage of everything they offer! Attend their hackathons, get AWS Certified, listen to exec, go to SW Conferences! Capital One offers so many things for full timers that interns can participate in.

Commercial Banking Intern

June - August 2017 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The company culture was incredible. Everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. They all had no problem taking time out of their day to talk to me about their experiences at Capital One so that I could get exposure to different parts of the bank and figure out what really interests me.

What I wish was different

I don't wish that anything had been different; everything was honestly perfect.

Advice

Be open to learning about every part of the bank. You may think that you know what you are interested in, but Capital One really values people who are all ears and want to learn about the bank as a whole.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Almost everything, it was a great experience! It was very nice of them to give us corporate housing too.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have a mentor/buddy directly on my team that could keep an eye on me, but we did have a buddy not on our team.

Advice

Make the most of it, don't just go to work, go home, and do nothing (like I did at times)

Product Management & Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I loved my team and thought my project was interesting, strategic, and impactful. The pay was great and I learned a ton. Intern events, including a ridiculously nice surprise trip, were fantastic.

What I wish was different

Data access issues and delays in execution in the beginning of my project concentrated much of the work in the last couple weeks. The Chicago office is also small (4 interns out of 140 total), so I didn't get to meet many of the interns who were placed in larger offices.

Advice

I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in consulting, finance, or product management. Capital One sends a survey after you accept the offer, and they place you on a project that matches your interests, which can range from growth strategy to investment banking-esque deal valuation to digital product management. The Chicago office is solely focused on Card Partnerships, so all projects in Chicago are surrounding that particular area.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Capital One was a great company and they really treat their interns well. There were lots of learning opportunities, we got to meet lots of execs (including the CEO) and there were fun events along the way like hackathons, amusement park trips, a trip to DC, and more. The people were very friendly and supportive. The workplace was relaxed and the campus was beautiful.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been longer. It was a 10-week program with one week of onboarding. It was tough to get a lot done in that time.

Commercial Bank Intern

July - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the culture and the tasks that I was assigned. Plus, the internship hosted many networking events and classes for me to attend.

What I wish was different

I wish I was notified about my work location further in advance. I had little time to find housing.

Advice

Network! Talk to people and learn about different parts in a company!
