Barista

May 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

It’s half bank half coffee shop and you have to work both parts because we’re licensed by the bank and we are a representation of both. I say “we” because that is the atmosphere that takes place in the work place it’s always as a team and as a “we”

What I wish was different

Everything was great

Advice

To be on time is to be late to be early is to be on time. When working with a team there is no such thing as “I”

Commercial Banking Intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

The offices, managers and HR were all very thoughtful in helping me make the most of my summer. We got to take really fun trips to New York City to do training modules and have fun bonding activities. They did a good job of making us feel integrated into the company from Day 1.

What I wish was different

I did not always have a lot of work to do which became tedious and boring sometimes. Also, we did not get to apply for positions in specific locations and were not in charge of preferencing specific groups. Additionally, I was placed on a team where the manager had not specifically requested an intern so he seemed unprepared for my arrival.

Advice

I'd reach out to the HR coordinator and schedule a call to express your preferences on location and team placement early on after receiving your offer and say that you may not intend on doing the internship if certain location and team requirements are not met.

Business Analyst Intern

What I liked

I had an amazing experience interning at Capital One. The mentorship stood out to me the most, and the actual impact my project had.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I had an amazing experience.

Advice

The position is actually pretty technical, be prepared to dive into analysis with SQL and Excel right from the start.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

- Good work environment - Positive work culture - Nice people - Cheap and good food - They bring all interns to Mclean to listen to Rich (the CEO) talk. Rich also seems like a nice guy. - They fund people to go to grace hopper. Whether you get it or not is performance-based I believe, but you get the ticket/hotel/food covered if you get selected.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more upfront with my preferences regarding teams and locations.

Advice

They treat interns pretty well, and most of the people I know had a great experience there. However, it is again team/manager dependent. If you would like to work at a certain location for full-time, there's a much higher chance you get it if you chose that location during your internship.

Software Developer Intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Everything! The company and the people were very welcoming, and the work was challenging and very rewarding.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked there longer!

Advice

It's easy to feel imposter's syndrome when you enter an internship, but don't fall into it, everyone has been there, and it's normal to feel like you don't know much. The people you work with are there to help you and teach you!

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Capital One invests a lot of effort into making the intern program well-run and fun. There are lots of intern events and many of the interns got to work with interesting projects.

What I wish was different

Some of the projects/technologies for the interns can be a little underwhelming.

Advice

Have fun! I really liked befriending the other interns.

Business Analyst Intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I liked that I was given a real-world problem to solve on my own that had potential actionable business implications. While I was working on my own, I also felt very supported by my manager, my mentor (a young business analyst on my team), my UVA mentor (a young business analyst not on my team who graduated from UVA), the internship program staff, and my fellow interns. I loved having a cohort of 180 other interns to help me grow my network.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been an opportunity to explore some other mini-problems aside from the one larger problem I spent 10 weeks working on, perhaps in a team setting rather than an individual one.

Advice

I would tell interns to take advantage of every opportunity presented to them, and to seek out experiences that they want to have - Capital One is more than happy to support you in that!

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

The atmosphere was great and everyone was friendly. Campus was beautiful, and food was amazing (and cheap!). I enjoyed the company culture and it was clear Capital One is doing a lot of work to use modern technologies.

What I wish was different

Capital One needs to manage its interns better and provide managers with better training for how to work with interns.

Advice

If you're not given work, ask others for help and if that doesn't work, escalate the issue.

Mainstreet Card Finance Intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

Capital One has a fantastic workplace culture and gives associates the autonomy to complete their own work the best way the think possible. There is also a heavy emphasis on the use of technology to provide more advanced insights and deliver a better banking experience for customers.

What I wish was different

I truly don't have a single complaint or thing I would want to change.

Advice

Capital One is a great place for both folks who have prior knowledge in financial services, but is also a wonderful company that embraces people with various backgrounds, including those that do not include finance or traditional business roles. If you're looking to enter the financial services industry but don't know where to start, look here!
