Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Jamestown, NY

What I liked

I got a lot of hands on experience with project management, working with a team, working with deadlines, managing installation projects, performing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and setting control limits on new production equipment robots. I also got experience with manufacturing, machining, Engine familiarization, and assembly processes.

What I wish was different

I can’t think of anything that I would have liked to change!

Advice

Cummins is fast paced. You may have to do a lot of learning and reaching out to people on your own, which is more realistic of real life anyway. It’s also a LOT of information and encompasses all topics of engineering from mechanics of solids to fluid mechanics to heat transfer to materials science. Be prepared to learn a lot! Great industry experience!!

Line Human Resources

June 2018 • Columbus, IN

What I liked

Cummins culture, Core Values/Vision & Mission. Recruiting and On Boarding experience, continued follow up from recruiting team. Teamwork/collaboration, leadership approach. Ongoing learning tools/resources, seminars, networking opportunities, and employee resource groups.

What I wish was different

Onboarding at work site and opportunity for buddy pairing, to help with the relocation work/life adjustment and culture shock. Having exposure to the variety of Employee Resources at Onboarding, that could help with college-professional life and relocation transition (similar to University Open house approach upon semester enrollment). Leadership mentor pairing from beginning of career start.

Advice

Be open minded and appreciate change/diversity, it will serve you as a big plus on the college, environment, and professional life transition. Also, don't be shy and network, network, network! whether it be on campus or social events. Cummins has a welcoming, helping and inclusive spirit and that networking approach/experience carries on.

Account Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Columbus, IN

What I liked

Cummins is a very big company with many years of experience. This allowed me to have the experience to work with cross-functional teams around the world, specially team members located in India, giving me a different perspective. I loved the fact that the company gave me a lot of responsibility and I was expected to work by myself, without much supervision. My projects were challenging, which made me learn a lot and grow professionally and personally.

What I wish was different

I wish my manager would have been more present during my time at the company. He spent half of the time I was in the company traveling because of work.

Advice

I think it is important for every person coming to this company that they are expected to get work done and excel at whatever project they are asked to complete. Also, make sure you ask not only a bunch of questions, but good ones! Cummins is a great place to work not only because of the years of experience, but because of its people! They are always willing to help you.

Application engineer

May - August 2019 • Shoreview, MN

What I liked

Great area to be in. Just a 20 minute drive to downtown Minneapolis. The culture at Cummins is great. Many resource groups and events planned for interns. Overall great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish it was more hands on and that they would be able to relate the work back to the education. They also gave the impression that millennials were hopeless, which is a negative view to have.

Advice

You are expected to network and set meetings up with coworkers and higher ups. Set up meetings and don’t be afraid to ask questions about anything to anyone. They have a huge open door policy at Cummins power generation business unit.

Product Development Engineer

June - August 2019 • Columbus, IN

What I liked

I was given the freedom to prioritize projects and judge what I feel was important to work on without anyone holding my hand or a manager putting together a weekly schedule for me (not all Cummins positions are like this)

What I wish was different

Cummins has a reputation of being extremely reliable so any crazy new development work that the engineers dream up tends to get pushed back by management.

Advice
