Ford Motor Company

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I liked all of the interns I worked with, all the tours that interns were invited to go to, and the team I was able to work with.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could pick what kind of work I'd be doing over the course of my internship. What I got assigned was very familiar to me and working on something that I haven't done before, by choosing from like a list, would have made my internship just a little bit more valuable to me.

Advice

To be open minded. Go out and try new things, go to all the intern events, and meet as many people as you can. Do this and you will have a great summer.

Supplier Technical Assistance - Site Engineer

June 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I don't just sit behind a desk every day. I am out at various suppliers' manufacturing sites. I have gotten to travel for my job as well. I like my working environments, and the collaborative teams that I am a part of. Ford's culture is very learning focused, and open. So, I don't feel uncomfortable asking questions because I am new to the project, or because I don't know whats going on.

What I wish was different

Due to the nature of the job, there isn't a schedule for what I should be doing every hour of every day. Some days, I wish I had a more structured schedule.

Advice

Talk to people! while its temping to just email or Webex people, the real work gets done when you meet face to face with people!

Hardware and Controls Intern

June - September 2018 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

New buildings with a pool table and ping pong table. Could leave work at work and it didn't follow you home. Free food in the kitchen. Lots of other interns to hang out with. Open floor plan, managers don't have their own office so it's less intimidating to go talk to them. Used agile development.

What I wish was different

My manager didn't really have anything prepared for me to do so I was somewhat aimless during my internship. A little more direction and structure would have really helped.

Advice

Create a finished product that you can show off. Don't just contribute to a project, it's less impressive than being done and wrapping something up and handing it off.

Sheet Metal Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I had an individualized project that allowed me to further explore different aspects of my major. I enjoyed being able to work on internal supply chain operations as well as the technical side of redesigning a warehouse layout on AutoCAD. In addition to my project, the network that Ford exposes their Interns to is also unique. Meeting with top executives bi-weekly to hear about their experiences and ask questions about your internship or their career path.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more exposure to an actual position that I could be placed into. Instead of being assigned a project for 12 weeks I would have liked to have a day-to-day objective like it was an actual position within the company

Advice

Network, network, network... Not only is talking to other people beneficial for you but them as well. The relationships you build with people is very important and ultimately makes you feel even more sure about career paths and opportunities in the future.

Material Planning and Logistics Intern

June - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

The independence of projects and the endless learning opportunities. The company always holds networking and professional events so that you can expand your network and learn as much about the company as possible.

What I wish was different

What I wish was different more relates to outside of work. The intern housing was a little weird. There were two intern housing areas in which one had significantly more interns placed there than the other. I was in the area with less interns, so making connections outside of work proved a little difficult.

Advice

Your supervisors and any other mentors you have while working here really want to see you succeed. Ask for help whenever you need it. They want to see you in a full-time position just as badly as you want to.

Digital Marketing Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work on a digital marketing project that dealt with a somewhat untouched market. This gave me a tremendous amount of freedom and allowed me to create something meaningful to the company. Also, Ford is incredible. People care for you so much, always willing to lend a hand, and will teach you more than you ever thought possible in 12 weeks. There are endless opportunitues to move up within the Marketing Sales & Service division. You can live in cities all over the US and create your own path after your entry position.

High Voltage Battery Applications Intern

May - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I liked that the internship was hands-on. I also liked that the company was welcoming and friendly. It made it very easy to ask questions and talk to coworkers when needed. I also thought the intern program was very helpful with getting to know the area, meeting other interns, and getting to know all different parts of the company.

What I wish was different

I think the only thing I wish would’ve been different is getting started with projects earlier on in my internship. I did a lot of project work but the first couple of weeks were slow because of poor communication between the group of people I was supposed to be working with and my team.

Advice

Talk to multiple different people throughout the company. It’s so helpful to see what’s going on, not only in your department, but in other departments so you can understand the big picture.

Product Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I really liked the culture at Ford and the people I worked with were amazing. There was always someone willing to help me out and make sure I had everything I needed. Intern "field trips" were organized so that the interns could see what other areas of the company and industry were like.

What I wish was different

I wish that my housing was a little closer, I commuted an hour each way to work everyday.

Advice

Ask lots of questions. There's always going to be something you don't know, so don't be afraid to ask. It's all part of the learning process.

May - August 2017 • Allen Park, MI

What I liked

Treated as a valued member of a team and contributed real work that is now live. Also, the company had plenty of fun events for interns.

What I wish was different

The living situation was a bit tight.

Advice

Give 110% every day and you will be hired. If there is extra work, offer to do it. If there is more to learn, learn it.

IT Developer Specialist

May - August 2017 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

The internship overall was a great learning experience and I had a project that made an impact to day to day business. I have been offered a position back and they are still using my project every day to manage all their documents and project information.

What I wish was different

The initial training process was not very clear and it took some time to understand exactly what it was that was expected of me. Once I figured everything out it was all good from there.

Advice

Take advantage of all the intern events that they offer. They make it easier to get to know people and make connections at Ford. They also help a lot with the internship itself.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2017 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

Being placed in ford labs was a great experience working in cutting edge technologies that Ford is using, my teammates were great and very accepting of an intern.

What I wish was different

The process of being placed was very opaque and you didn't have much say into which department you would be put into, more transparency and choice in that matter would be great

Advice

Get to know your teammates and network with them, they can be great friends and be great when searching for future internships and jobs.

What I liked

Collaborative projects that help make production more efficient. Big work environment with lots of things to learn and apply directly to things learned in school.

What I wish was different

A little better structure to the internship program. No direct mentor was assigned.

Advice
