Ford Motor Company

Product Development Intern

June - July 2020 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

Ford Motor Company taught me so many things including: newly acquired skills, research skills, data analyzing, and forming new relationships with engineers and suppliers virtually. In my internship this past Summer, I learned new skills like failure mode and warranty data analysis. I enjoyed virtually learning how to inspect parts that came to warranty to fix the failure mode issues, social network with other engineers and suppliers, and provide solutions to failure modes and warranty issues to ford management.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship would of had some in-person portions where I could see the vehicles I was working on. This would help me identify failures on the vehicles and get an up-close look of parts failing to see where the failure location was.

Advice

Be proactive on the projects they assign you right away, they are challenging and captivating to challenge you and sharpen your skills when you leave the internship.

Technical Support Analyst

May - August 2019 • Allen Park, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the internship because I was able to receive training and work in the role as a Technical Support Analyst. I was also able to network with different people that worked for Ford in many different parts of the company. The interns were also provided multiple experiences to go out and participate in different events that helped us to get acclimated to the Detroit, Michigan area. During these events, I was able to meet other interns from different schools and in different parts of the company.

What I wish was different

I was very impressed with the overall internship experience. If I was to choose something that could have been different, I would have liked to shadow the position that the Technical Support Analyst (TSA) leads into. This position is a Field Service Engineer and we were able to have an informational session with one. It would have been even better to be able to shadow one.

Advice

I would go in and understand that you are going to learn a lot. I would also have the expectation that you will have a lot of questions and it is encouraged and even expected for you to ask them. Don't be nervous to ask questions because everyone there is ready and wiling to answer any questions that you might have. If you don't know something, ask questions to figure it out. Also, be willing to help others if you know answers to their questions because the management team is very impressed by that.

What I liked

The Composites Research group was amazing; the people I worked with were extremely willing to teach me, and really appreciated the work that I did.

What I wish was different

The intern program at Ford was not great - there were not very many opportunities for networking with other interns or other people at the company.

Advice

Ask questions! You learn the most by being open about what you don't know.

Information Technology Intern

May - August 2019 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

I liked how easy it was for me to be integrated on a meaningful team within a week of working. The people I worked with were very knowledgeable and gave me insight on different facets of business. I also really appreciated that I now know what it means to work at a large corporate company, it's an experience that school can never prepare you for.

What I wish was different

I wish that my project would have used my design skills more, most of my work was consulting/project management/ requirements gathering. I learned a lot and it helped me shift my career interests

Advice

Always ask for work. There's always work to be done and it's all about self initiative to be recognized and appreciated by co workers and supervisors. I lacked towards the beginning, but by the end of my internship was owning my assignments and proud of the work I did.

Mechanical Engineering Co-Op

January - August 2019 • Kansas City, MO

What I liked

The engineering family at Ford is very inclusive and empowered me to succeed during my time there. I never felt afraid to ask questions when I didn’t know the answer to something, or wanted to learn more about a specific component.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more concrete projects that were asked of me from day 1 as opposed to doing a lot of “reactionary” measures on a day-to-day basis.

Advice

Make sure you are a people-person, otherwise, working at a location that has a polar Union dynamic can be brutal.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Dearborn, MI

What I liked

The internship was a great opportunity to expose myself to the inner-workings of true industry experience. My team that I worked with at Ford was excellent at exposing me to a wide variety of work while ensuring that I had real, meaningful deliverable tasks that would give sustenance to my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had slightly more time there, towards the end of the internship I had gained enough experience where my work was less about learning material and more about contributions. It would have been nice and felt more complete should I have had the opportunity to spend more time to see more of my work through and follow the results of my work as its used in the company.

Advice

The only limit to what you can be exposed to and work on is up to you - if you ask, supervisors and managers are surprisingly encouraging to work with in aiding where and how you work. Use your resources, if you stutter or hesitate on projects, chances are, if you ask, there'll be someone who's gone through something very similar in their work experience who can help you navigate and connect you with relevant resources.
