Human Resources Intern

April - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I love the flexibility of being human resource with a retailer. It wasn't just paperwork, but it was more interaction, coordinator of events, teaching moments with peers and direct reports.

What I wish was different

I wish I could of spent more time in the role during internship but working full time and internship mixed with school was a bit much.

Advice

If this is a field you love, make sure to know your laws, policies, and procedures. There is alot of people seeking out HR professionals for information about whatever company it is one works for.

Garden Center Associate

May 2018 • Fort Collins, CO

What I liked

I liked being with plants & caring for them. Hours were very flexible and managers and supervisors were friendly.

What I wish was different

Early in the summer, I got 35+ hours/week. Towards the middle-end of summer, I would get 10-12/week. Inconsistency in hours was challenging. Being outdoors when it's 90+ degrees is hard. Managers would consistently give contradicting instructions.

Advice

Employers notice when you do your job well--even if you're just one person in a large corporation.

Software Engineer Intern

May 2018 • Marietta, GA

What I liked

The ability to network with a large group of interns all across the country. The people at The Home Depot were also spectacular. They were kind, empathetic, respectful, and an overall delight to be around.

What I wish was different

If I could change anything, it would be to take the opportunity to live in the provided housing that summer. The abilities to build a solid network, have a good time, and make new friends was still there. However, it can get a bit challenging with the more distance between you and your fellow interns.

Advice

If there is one thing that everyone should take with them, whether it be there first, second, or final internship, don't be afraid to make mistakes. Yes, you should always strive to do your best, but you're there to learn and gain exposure to -- potentially -- your future profession. Ask questions, show humility, and remember to have a little fun!

Lumber Associate

June 2017 • Phoenix, OR

What I liked

My fellow associates are very friendly. They made the tough days easier. The managers at this location are extremely friendly, helpful, and understanding.

What I wish was different

I wish more companies (not just saying Home Depot) valued their associates more. While I enjoy working here, a lot of associates have either left or quit. I stuck it out as much as I could because I like working and I feel good helping coworkers and customers. It was extremely unfortunate some of the shift windows the lowest number of associates present were placed in. I wish corporations would focus not only on presentation of the products being sold and safety of the store, but also how the associates are doing in the store. I know I'm not the only person who feels this way, I'm just willing to be transparent about it. In NO WAY am I blaming my managers, I love them. I don't know who to blame, maybe I'm not trying to blame. I just know a lot of the associates I know could use some form of help.

Advice

If you are looking for a job that will keep your body strong and where you will learn valuable experience for a growing adult's future, APPLY FOR THIS JOB. Take everything you read online with a grain of salt. The flow of the way things work will change constantly. I'm not saying don't apply for Home Depot, I'm saying sometimes it sucks, but that's most jobs until you find one you love. Don't ever let yourself feel trapped in the work place, always look ahead, grow, and keep your eyes open for opportunities to improve yourself and your life.
