What I liked

I loved working with students and the advisors. The schedule was also good.

What I wish was different

I did not feel like all employees were held to a high enough standard.

Advice

Don’t let not being an IU student or graduate deter you from working there! I learned very quickly and soon fit right in.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Martinsville, IN

What I liked

I gained a lot of experience in the recreational therapy field. I got to meet some amazing kids and adults that I otherwise would have never crossed paths with. This job helped me to learn about so many different disabilities and gave me the opportunity to work hands on with such a great population. I also felt a real connection to the rest of the staff that I worked with throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I wish that it was maybe a little closer to home, but it was still an amazing experience.

Advice

This job was a lot of work with really long hours, and requires a lot of commitment to the camp. I wouldn't trade my experience for anything. You have to be devoted to working with kids with different disabilities, and being able to be there for all of their needs. It may seem intimidating at first, but the reward that I gained just from meeting these kids and being able to watch them grow was definitely worth it in the end.

What I liked

The job was fantastic. Plenty of creative freedom and the leadership from my peers helped myself become a better designer. Also, learning new software to improve and broaden my skill set was important to being a better overall worker in the environment.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

Reach out to your personal network. Never feel nervous to talk to people older than yourself, those individuals may have the best advice.
