National Low Income Housing Coalition

Field Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to talk with politicians on the current low-income housing crisis. In addition, I was able to write articles on what different state organizations are doing to aid low-income housing residents. I sat in on meetings with the staffers of Senators and Representatives.

What I wish was different

I do wish that I didn’t have to cut my internship short by two weeks because I had to return to school. If I were to do this opportunity again I would start working earlier in May.

Advice

Don’t disqualify yourself allow for the hiring management to do that for you. When I applied to this job I was highly unqualified. They wanted a senior pursuing a political science degree and I was a sophomore majoring in industrial engineering. I emailed them and told them about my passion in housing. They allowed me to interview with them and taught me the necessary things to be a field intern.

What I liked

It was a great place to intern. There was a lot of focus on helping interns learn and gain invaluable experiences. I learned about what it was like to work for a nonprofit, and specifically how the legislative system works. I also simply learned what it was like to work in an office, in a 9-to-5 job.
