The Haven at Pismo

AOD Intern

July 2018 • Arroyo Grande, CA

What I liked

I liked the hands on experience working with clients, facilitating groups, putting my skills into practice and the amazing staff! This internship was a real learn by doing job! I started out shadowing counselors and when I was comfortable I was able to jump in and take on a counseling role! I enjoyed facilitating groups and finding new material to bring in for the clients. It was great getting to know the clients, learn their stories, and help them build the tools to cope with triggers and urges to use.

What I wish was different

If this internship was paid it would have been nice but I was able to get work study from Cuesta college since I'm enrolled there as well so it all worked out!

This is a great opportunity for anyone going into counseling or social work. I found this internship because I'm doing the Addiction Studies program at Cuesta. It can be pretty heavy and emotional working in a substance use treatment facility because not everyone makes it or wants to follow the suggestions. It takes a lot of patience and empathy/compassion to work with this population but it is so rewarding!
