I enjoy connecting with other students, coaches, athletes, and staff about their goals, future plans, and experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish my experience and the other volunteers' experiences were more hands on, technical, and engaging to learn more in depth about the reasons why they do certain things with the athletes.

Try to engage with everyone, especially those that can relate to you and broadly get to know the department.

Cancer Researcher

What I liked

It is amazing, I currently since am a Cancer Researcher and it has been the best experience. I have learn so much for myself and for cancer. I see potential growth in myself due to this experience, and the staff has been so great and helpful in answering all my questions. When i first apply to this job i didn't think i was going to be able to do it, but i certainly was able to and I'm glad i did.

What I wish was different

Since being a full time student and working, the research timing was a little bit off since the experiment's most of the time is in the morning and late afternoon.

Advice

Don't underestimate yourself, maybe their will be something challenging and you don't understand something but always ask because you will learn and it will be much easier next time you do it.

I wish I had been able to learn more advanced techniques while I was there.

I would advise everyone to get started as soon as possible! The longer you are able to work in a lab the more you’ll learn.

What I liked

I learned so much more about our research topic which focused on Chinese and Russian foreign policy. I also experienced how a research project can change depending on your findings, availability of sources, and the interests of stakeholders.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. I liked the independence of conducting research on my own and meeting weekly to discuss findings and decide how to move forward.

Advice

I became a research assistant by simply emailing a number of professors who focused on subjects I was interested in and one responded and she was thrilled to have me. I would say, just take a leap and put yourself out there!
