I’ve always enjoyed doing research. I like working with professors. This project was neat because I worked on a paper to publish

Deaf Educator and Graduate Mentor
March 2018 • Logan, UT
What I liked
I love the staff I work with and the people I get to serve. My job is satisfying and the bonus is working at the university lets my spouse have reduced tuition.
What I wish was different
I wish educators in Utah got a higher salary but I know this is a work in progress.
Advice
Never burn a bridge. My field is quite small and the people I worked with in my graduate program have become some of my biggest mentors and advocates. I know that we will continue to serve in the field together and I am glad I sought out meaningful relationships as a student that helped me find work today.

International Orientation Program Coordinator
November 2016 • Logan, UT
What I liked
I like that I get to work with both current and incoming students. I get to play a part in their experience at USU and help them see the potential that they have in themselves. Everyday is different and it brings its own set of challenges but it keeps me on my toes and I enjoy that. There is a good mix of student interaction and independent working.
What I wish was different
I don't think there is anything with the job that I wish would be different, but I wish that I would have approached the job differently at first. There was a steep learning curve and I struggled to find myself and balance at first. Things were rough and it was a long road, but it has ended up being an incredible job and an incredible opportunity to learn and grow.
Advice
Be open to learning in everything that you do, and do not be too quick to jump to another job. I truly believe that it takes a year of being in a job to truly learn how to do it and what all it entails. Be patient with yourself, your job, and the people you work with.
