School Age Care Member

June - August 2019 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

Pursuing a degree in middle/high school social studies education, I enjoyed diversifying my experience working with the youth. Leading activities and working with elementary age kids throughout the summer taught me extraordinary skills that I can utilize in my future classrooms, and significantly helped my personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish I received greater training on working with children with challenging behaviors outside a school setting. Never before working with elementary aged children in a summer camp program, I was largely unaware of best methods for redirecting children with different challenging behaviors.

Advice

Biggest piece of advice would be to be patient. There were times throughout the summer that I was frustrated with my abilities to help these children with different scenarios, but I learned that perseverance was crucial to succeeding in being the best role model possible for these kiddos.
