School Age Care Member

June - August 2019 • La Crosse, WI

What I liked

Pursuing a degree in middle/high school social studies education, I enjoyed diversifying my experience working with the youth. Leading activities and working with elementary age kids throughout the summer taught me extraordinary skills that I can utilize in my future classrooms, and significantly helped my personal growth.

What I wish was different

I wish I received greater training on working with children with challenging behaviors outside a school setting. Never before working with elementary aged children in a summer camp program, I was largely unaware of best methods for redirecting children with different challenging behaviors.

Advice

Biggest piece of advice would be to be patient. There were times throughout the summer that I was frustrated with my abilities to help these children with different scenarios, but I learned that perseverance was crucial to succeeding in being the best role model possible for these kiddos.

Getting to work with kids and teaching them about STEM. As well as getting to know the kids and their families.

What I wish was different

I wish that I expanded more with kids outside of the age group that I was assigned to.

Advice

If you love kids and having a good time this is the job for you. But its hard work you'll come home after your eight hour shift feeling exhausted. And being out in the Sun and heat all day can really get to you, so it is very important that you are able to take care of yourself.

Lifeguard

December 2017 • Racine, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the social aspect of the job, as it allowed me to practice composing myself in a professional manner even when encountering patrons that did not act similarly.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more coworkers on the job as it was quite difficult to effectively do my job when consistently running at the minimum capacity of lifeguards.

Advice

Be prepared for confrontation, but know that as long as you stick to the rules you will be backed up by superiors. Also, know when the letter of the rule applies vs. when the spirit of the rule should apply, and don’t sweat the technicalities.
