Camp Counselor

May 2018 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

Getting to work with kids and teaching them about STEM. As well as getting to know the kids and their families.

What I wish was different

I wish that I expanded more with kids outside of the age group that I was assigned to.

Advice

If you love kids and having a good time this is the job for you. But its hard work you'll come home after your eight hour shift feeling exhausted. And being out in the Sun and heat all day can really get to you, so it is very important that you are able to take care of yourself.

Lifeguard

December 2017 • Racine, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed the social aspect of the job, as it allowed me to practice composing myself in a professional manner even when encountering patrons that did not act similarly.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more coworkers on the job as it was quite difficult to effectively do my job when consistently running at the minimum capacity of lifeguards.

Advice

Be prepared for confrontation, but know that as long as you stick to the rules you will be backed up by superiors. Also, know when the letter of the rule applies vs. when the spirit of the rule should apply, and don’t sweat the technicalities.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I gained the experience of working with children and applying myself to leadership opportunities within the camp. Additionally, I was able to use my creativity to plan events for campers and create a fun, positive environment.

What I wish was different

Management was very judgmental and penalized individuals for mistakes that were outside of the control of counselors. Additionally, management created a toxic environment between many different counselors.

Advice

This job isn’t for the money, your focus should be on inspiring and helping the campers. They really look up to you and you inspire them to become better kids and people in the long run.
